Read More »]]> Our before and after school program (also known as “Milk and Cookies”) started on the first day of school this year (August 15). Like last year, most of the children in the school signed up for the program. Children are now signing up for sports programs, in afterschool, in the fall. Soon they will be signing up for Friday Clubs (such as dance, photography, drama, gardening, robotics, science). Our snacks have improved by serving tap water instead of juice and finding a better supplier (The Fruit Guys) for fresh organic fruit for all the children.

Most of the parents signed their children up for the Before/After School Program at the Back to School Picnic on August 14. It was a gorgeous sunny San Francisco day!

All events raise money for the programs that Friends of Harvey Milk funds at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy.

On Saturday, May 21, 2011, the Cruisin’ the Castro tour from 10am-Noon will donate 50% of the tour proceeds to our school! The tour meets at the rainbow flag pole (Castro/Market) at 10am. Cost is $35 adults, $25 children 5-12years, under 5 years are free.

“The student body is getting bigger but the resources necessary are not. In terms of resources to support the dynamical types of students we serve, absolutely not,” said the school’s principal, Christina Velasco.

With the school’s parent population unable to afford the burden by itself, it is reaching out to the larger LGBT community and corporate donors for help.

We’ve determined that recurring donations, of as little as $25 per month, would sustain our programs in the coming year. Jennifer Dunn, one of our board members, promised:

“We would love it if we had 200 people sign up for recurring donations at the $25 or $50 level. Our treasurer would get up and do a little dance,” said Dunn.

For the 2nd half of this school year, the After School program is offering a variety of great choices for the kids, in addition ongoing tutoring and academics:

  • Monday Chess Club and SPCA Puppy Dog Tales
  • Basketball and Yoga on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Community Walls Art & MakArt Programs on Thursdays
  • Friday Clubs

For Friday Clubs, the kids choose from:

  • Hip Hop (learning routines to perform for the school)
  • Passion for Fashion (creating accessories)
  • Gardening (planting and growing to green the schoolyard)
  • Drama (improv, masks, puppets, creating a performance)
  • Digital Design (photo editing, layout, movie making)
  • Photography (studio and outdoor)
  • Science (exploration and theory, be a “Mad Scientist!”)
  • Arts and Crafts (group projects – last year they created a mural)
  • Team Sports (practice and learn rules of games)
  • Robotics (build and program robotic dogs and cats)
  • Video Games and Computers

Snacks!! We are working to improve the After School snack program.  The first thing we’re doing is replacing juice boxes with tap water and teaching the kids about water.  Next we’ll start improving the nutrition of the food the kids eat for snack.

We’re looking for ideas for healthier snacks for the kids on our tight budget and/or a sponsor for healthier snacks.  Send suggestions or ideas for sponsorship or an offer of sponsorship to Susan Tramontana (who runs the after school program) at afterschool@harveymilk.com
