CA Governor Signs Harvey Milk Day Bill

As reported today in the San Francisco Chronicle:

Capping a remarkable year for slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill to create a state day of recognition for Milk, making him only the second Californian, after naturalist John Muir, to receive the honor.

The governor signed the measure late Sunday along with new laws to help gay and lesbian people in the state, including a measure giving same-sex couples legally married in other states all the rights of marriage in California.

Harvey Milk Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

The late San Francisco supervisor and gay rights champion Harvey Milk will be one of 16 people to be awarded the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, according to a White House announcement.

The medals, which represent the country's highest honor for a civilian, are to be the first to be awarded by President Barack Obama. He will present the awards at a ceremony on Aug. 12.

Announcing the Sandra Leigh Legacy Fund

The Friends of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is proud to announce the establishment of the Sandra Leigh Legacy Fund to honor Ms. Leigh's thirty-five years of educating and working for social justice in San Francisco. If you wish to leave a contribution and/or a message, you can do so below.

All funds raised through the Legacy Fund will be used to continue Sande's hard work and dedication to support the students at Harvey Milk. Specifically, it will forward her vision of academic excellence, celebrating diversity, teaching tolerance, nonviolence and respect, building strong home-school-community connections, and understanding lessons from the Civil Rights, Peace and Social Justice movements. All donations are tax-deductible through Friends of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, a nonprofit organization started in 2005.
