About

Mission

In 2006, members of the Harvey Milk Parent Faculty Club (PFC) created a separate fundraising organization to accommodate the groundswell of support from community members for Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, a small alternative public elementary school in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood.  The charitable mission of Friends of HMCRA (FoHM) is to support the educational and extra-curricular activities of students of the school.

Friends of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is a 501(c3) nonprofit with Federal Tax ID 20-5481914.

We fund program activities central to the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy mission and that are not otherwise supported by the Parent Faculty Club or School Site Council.  They include: Outdoor Education and Athletics, Visual and Performing Arts, Science in the Schools, Civil Rights, Reading, Health & Nutrition, the After School program.

The School We Support

Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is a model for what public, urban education can and should be.  With a student population inclusive of all and made up largely of disadvantaged children, Harvey Milk is proud to be closing the achievement gap for all of its students: In 2005, Harvey Milk student test scores rose more than any other school in the state of California. In 2006, their scores rose again– almost three times that which the experts expected, and they have continued to rise through 2010.

Test scores are just one indicator of this school’s success. HMCRA is a vibrant community that welcomes families of all races, ethnicities, religions, socio-economic situations, and family structures. Our full-inclusion program places children with special needs in every classroom and supports them as an integral part of our school. Our curriculum teaches children about the life and work of Harvey Milk and other civil rights leaders from history and the present, and our diverse community involves them daily in positive (and sometimes challenging) interactions with people of different backgrounds. We are proud to graduate budding social justice leaders every year.
